What God Has Given

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)
During these days of tension and unrest all around the world, perhaps we need these words as a reminder of what God has given us and what He has NOT given us.
First, we need to know that God is not the author of the fear that creeps into our souls – fear is not from God. God’s gift is a supernatural calmness and confidence as we put our trust in Him. If we focus on the bad things going on all around us and spend our time pondering on those things, fear will find a home in our hearts. As believers, we must choose to focus and ponder on things of God – the most important things.
Although our world craves power and tramples on the weaknesses of others, God gives us a power that is not of this world – a supernatural power, a superior power – a power that makes us more than conquerors through Him who loved us. (Romans 8:37)
Every day we see evidence of hatred and loathing in our world, but we are not to get caught up in those unhealthy emotions. We must remember that God’s Word makes it clear that we are to love one another, for love is from God. (1 John 4:7)
In a world that seems to have lost its collective mind, God wants so much more for His children. He has given us a sound mind, a clear-thinking mind, a mind that is to stay focused on those things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and praiseworthy. (Philippians 4:8)
Father, thank you for your Word that tells us what we need to know. Help us recognize when fear attempts to make a home in our hearts. Help us find our calmness and confidence in Your gifts of power, love, and a sound mind. In a world where truth is hard to discern, help us stay connected to the one truth we can count on – the truth of Your Word. Help us to stay calm in our souls. Amen
