A Historical Reality

Have you ever struggled with doubt as it relates to following Jesus? Do you ever have unanswered questions that nag at you? Honestly, I have had my own doubts at times. When faced with times of doubt or uncertainty, it is good to know how to process them through eyes of faith.

In my own life, I come back to the historical reality of Jesus as the bedrock of my faith. He really came to earth. He really lived a sinless life. He died a real death on a real cross. He literally rose from the grave The absolute foundation of my life is the truth of Jesus. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:17, And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.

The historical reality of Jesus was also of utmost importance to Peter. After quoting the prophet Joel to explain God’s gift of the Spirit, he quickly starts unpacking the recent events surrounding Jesus. In his own words, listen to how Peter stresses the reality of Jesus and His resurrection:

Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know – this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. (Acts 2:22-24)

Peter and the disciples are not merely continuing the wise teachings of Jesus. They are not just inspired by a good man who was a martyr and victim. It was the complete historical reality of Jesus – all the way through His life, death, and resurrection – that set Peter on fire and is the heart of the good news.

The same is true for us today. Following Jesus is not blind faith or the result of a legend passed down through the years. He lived a real life so we can now have a real faith. He died a real death so we can have real forgiveness. No matter how shaky or solid your faith may feel right now, take a few moments to reflect on the historical reality of Jesus. He is a real Savior who can handle our real doubts, no matter how big they are.
