Deliver Us From Temptation

That completed the testing. The Devil retreated temporarily, lying in wait for another opportunity. (Luke 4:13 MSG)
Anyone else give pause to the first four words? That completed the testing. How awesome would that be? Knowing it was done for a while? Often we feel like we trip from one season of temptation to another. But, keep reading… the devil had tucked his tail and crawled away, but only for now.
These 40 days of temptation for Jesus provided a great season of learning for Him… and can be the same for us as well.
Three things we can learn:
1. Expect and be ready for temptation.
Jesus came into this season full of the Spirit. We have to be prepared and keep our spirit tank filled to the brim. How? Being in constant communication with the Father and filling our minds with scripture will help keep us prepared. It will happen. We must be prepared.
2. Recognize your temptations.
Recently I asked on Social Media, “What tempts you?” I wasn’t sure what to expect. But hear what surprised me -- I only received ONE response. I mean, warm doughnuts for sure, but… no one else even responded. And since the question gave me pause, I believe that is the point. We don’t know. When we drive a car we know to watch for potholes. We must do the same in our spiritual lives.
3. God is faithful to protect us and provide for us so we can endure.
Jesus didn’t have to fill God in on the temptation and the pain it caused. God was right there with Him and ready to support Him and keep that spiritual tank full.
Lord, thank You for walking through the brightest mornings and darkest nights with us. Amen.
