Jesus Understands

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. (Luke 4:1-2)
Temptation wasn’t something new when we come to the fourth chapter of Luke. David was tempted by Bathsheba, Sampson was tempted by Delilah; and even in the first few moments in the Garden, Eve was tempted by the serpent. So, why did God think we needed another peek at the subject? I tend to believe it had less to do with temptation and more to do with the One being tempted.
Jesus, being fully man, had dealt with temptation before. His human side needed to understand that feeling and know how hard it is for people to deal with temptation. He wanted His time on earth to be fully submerged in everything we’d face. I can imagine He and the Father would have discussions about the appeal of another cookie, pushing boundaries, or wanting what the kid down the street had.
However, also being fully God, Jesus would have been incapable of falling to temptation. Satan could hurl it all at Him, and did; but there was no obstacle big enough to trip up the one that created that obstacle. And, even knowing He’d come out unscathed from the 40 days in the wilderness, Jesus was willing.
He was willing to learn, understand, starve, and be tempted to get to know us better.
To love us more.
To embrace His sacrifice.
How many times have you said to someone, “you just don’t understand what I’m going through”? I can’t even count the times. But I do know Jesus understands. He knows completely and wholly the temptations, desires, and obstacles that trip us up. And, while He didn’t fall, He also fully understands the pain of consequences. He loves us that much.
Jesus understands the temptation you are facing. Ask Him to help you bypass the pit by keeping your eyes on Him.
