It's About Time

One of the first things I do in the morning when I wake up is look at the clock to see the time. Our days are measured by time. Chronos is the Greek word from which we get our English word, chronological. Time keeps on ticking into the future. It flies when we are having fun. Some days we spend our time well; some days we waste it. This kind of time relates to clocks, calendars and is measurable. We live with an awareness of chronos, but today we witness a different type of time.

“Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel’” (Mark 1:14-15 ESV).

The word translated time used above does not come from chronos, it comes from the Greek word kairos which means: opportune time, set time, appointed time, due time, definitive time, seasonable time, proper time for action. Kairos describes the kind, or quality, of time -- whereas chronos denotes extent, or quantity, of time.

Kairos is when things unfold in the exact manner and time God has appointed them to happen. Jesus states that the time appointed by God is fulfilled for Jesus to begin His earthly ministry. Jesus accepted God’s perfect timing in His life!

In these days when many things have come to a screeching halt, do you believe in and trust God’s perfect timing for your life? Just as God had a time for Jesus to begin His earthly ministry, He has set apart times for your life. I am convinced waiting for God’s timing is one of the hardest parts of the Christian life.

That may be because His timing is not our timing. “But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (2 Peter 3:8 ESV).

Just because we are to wait for God’s kairos does not mean God is not acting on our behalf. He may appear silent, but He is acting. He does have a plan and He is moving according to His perfect timing. We can be confident that God is acting on our behalf!

Lord, would you please help us to trust and accept your perfect timing!
